Kerbs and footpaths

Learn about the types of footpaths and make kerb and footpath requests online.

Footpaths

A footpath is a path or sidewalk alongside a road, typically used by pedestrians. It is often paved and separated from the road to provide a safe walking space.

Types of footpaths

There are three types of footpaths within the City:

  • Footpaths: these paths tend to be narrower than the other paths and are installed by the City in residential streets.
  • Shared paths: these paths are wider and cater for higher volumes of pedestrians and cyclists and generally connect to train stations and major City infrastructure.
  • Principal shared paths (PSP): the path system that runs along the Mitchell Freeway from Romeo Road, Alkimos to the Perth CBD is managed by Main Roads WA. To report any hazards or concerns on this pathway network, contact Main Roads WA

Kerb and footpath requests

Kerb and footpath requests involve formal inquiries or applications made to local authorities for the repair, replacement, or installation of kerbs (curbs) and footpaths (sidewalks) in public areas.

How to request a replacement footpath

Kerb replacement is carried out in conjunction with the City’s Road Preservation and Resurfacing Program; unless the kerb is displaced, or a hazard, it will not be replaced.

Residents and developers are unable to undertake (or engage a contractor to undertake) removal or install a footpath or kerb as it is an offence under the legislation and penalties may apply. The City can replace a kerb at the owner’s expense (the City will provide a quotation).

How to request a new footpath

Requests for new footpaths are scored against a list of criteria to help the City prioritise footpath projects. Once the projects are prioritised, new footpath projects are listed for consideration in the City’s Five Year Capital Works Program.

To request an investigation into the possibility of a new footpath, please contact the City via info@joondalup.wa.gov.au
