The City has implemented a range of tree planting initiatives aimed at fostering biodiversity, enhancing urban landscapes, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
Street tree planting program
You can choose a free street tree for your verge from the City’s Preferred Tree Species List. The list assists property owners to select a street tree that is suitable for their verge. Please refer to the list in the tree management guidelines below.
Please note, you must be the property owner, or authorised agent, to request a free street tree.
Leafy City Program
About the Leafy City program
The City of Joondalup Leafy City Program provides increased urban canopy cover by planting trees within the City of Joondalup suburban streetscapes to create cooler, inviting green urban spaces for residents and mitigate the increasing heat island effect. Since May 2017, over 4,500 new trees have been added to the urban canopy in the City of Joondalup’s neighbourhoods.
Program guidelines
There are a few factors such as line of sight matters and proximity to existing services, infrastructure and property boundaries which are considered before eligibility for the Leafy City Program is confirmed. If your street is not included in the Leafy City Program, you may be eligible for the street tree planting program.
How to apply
The next round of tree planting will occur in May 2025. The selected streets receiving Leafy City Program trees in 2025 will be listed here soon.
Conservation and revegetation
The Natural Environment team grow and supply a large number of trees every year to community groups and schools to plant in natural areas and coastal foreshore reserves.
Friends Groups are volunteer-run groups that conserve and protect natural areas managed by the City of Joondalup. They are involved in a variety of different activities with the aim of restoring the reserve and educating others about the natural environment. They often undertake revegetation and weeding activities, as well as rubbish clean up and guided nature walks. To help conserve and protect our environment, please contact your local Friends Group.
