School support

Discover the educational programs, resources and opportunities offered to school groups within the City of Joondalup. 

School programs

The City’s School Liaison Officer can provide support to schools by:

  • Arranging Civic and Library Discovery Tours.
  • Linking teachers to educational opportunities provided by the City.

Programs are usually fully funded by the City and are designed to assist students achieve the standards outlined in the Western Australian Curriculum.

Some programs include:

The City offers waste education opportunities for schools which are curriculum aligned and delivered by professional educators. Schools can access these programs:

  • WasteSorted schools program (provided through The Waste Authority)
  • The Recoverables program, supported by the City of Joondalup, involves Veolia's Waste Education Officer delivering tailored lessons at schools based on the topics selected by each school. These lessons are aligned with the Australian curriculum to ensure relevance and educational value.

There are many other ways in which schools can be involved in Waste Education:

  • Clean Up Australia Day
  • Plastic Free July
  • Clean Schools
  • Adopt-a-Spot.

Children’s Book Week is the annual Australia-wide celebration of children’s books, authors, illustrators and reading. Children will be introduced to local authors and illustrators and be inspired to read, write, and illustrate. These programs are available to local school students and home school families.

The City of Joondalup invites local schools to participate in this annual art competition. Prizes are awarded to the winning artist, their school, and the runners up. Individual students, partners, or groups can contribute to the designs. The winning artwork will be submitted to WALGA’s Showcase in Pixels competition.

Book a Civics and Library tour to enhance your class’s study of Civics and Citizenship. On the tour, students will:

  • Discover out how local government works
  • Find the services local government provides to the community
  • Take part in a mock election
  • Identify the difference between local laws and state laws
  • Learn about elected members and council officers and their roles in the community
  • Uncover their families’ role in shaping the community in which they wish to live.

School groups and home school families are invited to participate in curriculum-linked activities based on the local area and history. The Local History collection, found on the lower ground floor at Joondalup Library, has an extensive range of resources such as: photographs, oral history interviews, newspapers and materials documenting how the local area has changed. The kits are suitable for use by teachers to support the HASS curriculum.

Using their school’s Institutional Bulk Loan Membership, teachers can borrow:

  • Investigating Joondalup’s Past school resources kits. Each kit contains:
    • photographs
    • maps
    • oral history excerpts
    • stories from the Suburbs booklets.
  • My Learning Journal.
  • Short term loan local history resources.

Year 12 ATAR Geography

Students can access resources and information supporting a Unit 3 case study focussing on the Ocean Reef Marina site and adjacent coastal areas. Additional activities can be arranged when you book in for a Civic/Library tour to extend your students learning experience.

Literacy education

City of Joondalup Libraries have a range of programs and opportunities to assist teachers to meet the literacy requirements.

Better Beginnings

This is an exciting extension to the state-wide literacy program for kindergarten aged children. Free Better Beginnings Kindy packs can be delivered to all kindergarten classes in the City of Joondalup.

Display schoolwork

Showcase your students’ achievements to the broader community through public display.

Library discovery tours

Libraries actively collect resources that support school curriculum and are available to conduct Library Discovery Tours for class groups, home school families or teaching staff on their professional development days.

Story Time

Library staff can come to your classroom and run Story Time sessions on request or alternatively you can bring your students to the library for a dedicated session.

The City has developed an extensive range of curriculum linked teaching resources for the coastal, wetland and bushland programs. All resources have been produced by the City with the expertise of a teacher and all due care has been taken to ensure accurate information has been provided and the work is Australian Curriculum aligned at the time of production. Adopt a coastline program

The Adopt a Coastline Program is for students in years 4 to 6 to raise awareness of the ecological values of the local coastline and learn about rehabilitation and protection activities along the coast.

Adopt a bushland program

The Adopt a Bushland program is for students in years 4 to 6 to raise awareness of the ecological values of local bushland and learn bushland management skills such as weeding and litter collection.

The City of Joondalup invites schools to acknowledge young citizens and their outstanding contribution to the community with Student Citizenship Awards for graduation ceremonies.
