Understanding household hazardous waste 

Household Hazardous Waste includes everyday products that are flammable, toxic, explosive, or corrosive. Common examples include acids, aerosols, batteries and paint. Proper disposal of these items is crucial to prevent harm to the environment and human health. 

Categories of household hazardous waste

Household (domestic) hazardous waste, up to 20kg or litres per material type at drop off locations.  

Below is a summary of items we do and do not accept.  For a detailed list of accepted materials and transportation tips, visit the Waste Authority website

  • acids and alkalis 

  • aerosols 

  • batteries (excluding lead acid batteries) 

  • flammable liquids and solids 

  • paint 

  • pesticides 

  • fluorescent tubes and light fittings 

  • gas cylinders (excluding automotive LPG cylinders and large household cylinders) 

  • engine coolants and glycols. 

Important note: most facilities also accept 'unknown chemicals' in secure, sealed, chemical-resistant containers. 

  • asbestos 
  • automotive LPG cylinders and large household cylinders 
  • empty chemical containers or drums
  • EPIRBs or PLBs 
  • e-waste including mobile phone and printer cartridges 
  • explosives (other than flares), ammunition or fire arms 
  • halon fire extinguishers 
  • lead acid batteries 
  • pharmaceuticals and sharps 
  • tyres 
  • used motor oil.
