About immunisation

Immunisation refers to the process where the body induces immunity to a disease because of a vaccine. The World Health Organisation considers immunisation to be the most effective medical intervention to prevent deaths and reduce disease in communities.

Immunisation is the safest and most effective way of providing protection against childhood diseases. After immunisation, your child is far less likely to catch these diseases if there is an outbreak in the community. The benefit of protection against childhood diseases far outweighs the very small risks of immunisation.

If enough people in the community are immunised, the infection can no longer be spread from person to person and the disease can die out altogether. This is how smallpox was eliminated from the world and why polio has disappeared from many countries.

Immunisation clinics

At its meeting held on Tuesday 28 May 2024, Council resolved to request the Chief Executive Officer to cease the City’s immunisation clinics and its school-based immunisation program, after thorough consultation and handover period of services to the Department of Health, to ensure the continuation of immunisation services.

In response to the Council’s resolution, the City has engaged with the Department of Health to ensure a smooth transition for the immunisation services the City provided. It is noted that the Department of Health, through the Child and Adolescent Community Health Service, already provide a school-based immunisation program to all other metropolitan local governments that will now also include all schools within the City of Joondalup from 2025.

The City will no longer be providing immunisation clinics from Tuesday 31 December 2024. Further information on childhood immunisation services across the metropolitan area is available on the Child and Adolescent Health Service website. A list of metropolitan immunisation clinics and contact details is also available.
