Definition
Miniature animals are defined by specific height and weight criteria under the Animals Local Law 1999, with miniature pigs not exceeding 650mm in height and weighing between 45-55 kg as adults, and miniature horses not exceeding 870mm in height and classified as such by the Miniature Horse Association of Australia.
Restrictions
- Residents may apply to keep only one miniature pig or a miniature horse
- A miniature horse cannot be kept on land that is less than 1000m2
- A miniature horse cannot come within 9 metres of any house
- Keeping a large animal such as a pig, horse, sheep, cow, deer, alpaca, goat or the like is prohibited in most areas of Joondalup.
Conditions for keeping of miniature animals
On land zoned residential, special residential or special rural, occupier of any premises where a miniature pig or miniature horse is kept shall:
- Only keep a sterilised animal and retain written proof of its sterilisation
- Ensure the animal does not cause a nuisance to any neighbour regarding noise, dust or odour
- Confine a miniature pig on the property at all times
- Maintain documentary evidence that the miniature pig’s veterinary treatment against roundworm and tape worm is current.
Application requirements
To apply, residents must submit a completed application form along with a copy of the sterilization certificate and veterinary treatment records for roundworm and tapeworm for miniature pigs, and pay the application fee.
