Bees

Residents are required to obtain written approval from the City to keep bees, as bees can present a significant risk to those with allergies.

Beehive requirements

When considering installing a beehive on a property, the following items are required:

  • A supply of water is to be immediately available on the premises at all times
  • Sufficient barriers must be provided to manage and maintain the flight paths of bees above 2 metres.
  • Only a docile strain of bees should be kept
  • A maximum of two hives may be approved
  • Hives must be well maintained and not cause a nuisance
  • Registration with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is required once approval is obtained from the City.

Beehive application requirements

The following are requirements when applying for permission to locate a beehive on a property:

  • The applicant must be a permanent resident at the premises
  • A written or online application must be submitted
  • A site plan indicating the proposed location of the beehives, sources of water and barriers that affect flight paths
  • Specifications of the hive
  • Payment of the application fee.
