Climate change initiatives

Climate change is the long-term change in weather patterns caused by both natural and human activities. Human activities have been the main driver of climate change since the 1800s primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions and raised temperatures.

Climate change is affecting us and our environment, and is likely to have a significant impact on the City and its community. Responding effectively to climate change requires both reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation) and being ready to adapt to climate change impacts as they occur (adaptation).

Cities Power Partnership

The City became part of the Climate Council’s Cities Power Partnership in 2022. The City recognises the need to reduce emissions and support communities to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The City works alongside 180 other local governments in the Cities Power Partnership through:

  • Collaborating and sharing knowledge with experts, other councils and other participants of the program.
  • Connecting with partners nation-wide to discover innovative solutions and accelerate climate initiatives.
  • Deliver joint projects in leading climate action.
  • For more details about the City’s involvement in this partnership, visit Cities Power Partnership website.

City’s commitment to climate change

In 2016, the City was recognised internationally as one of the first local governments to adopt a Climate Change Strategy that combined both adaptation and mitigation targets and initiatives.

Since adopting its first Climate Change Strategy in 2014, the City has celebrated the following achievements:

  • Installed solar photovoltaic panels on 19 City buildings.
  • Installed solar battery storage systems on two City buildings.
  • Working to upgrade street lighting to LEDs through the Joondalup City Centre Lighting Program and facility upgrades.
  • Joined the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) Power Purchase Agreement to purchase renewable energy.
  • Begun transitioning fleet vehicles to electric vehicles.
  • Ran several community awareness and education campaigns to encourage the community to reduce their personal emissions.
