Enjoy winter at the libraries this July with a range of fun activities that inspire creativity and encourage curiosity.  Some of the events planned for winter include Oceans at night, Marvellous Minibeasts, Puppet Lab with the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, Scratch Art and a session with WA Wildlife.

Further information, and booking links, will be available soon. Bookings open on Monday 23 June.

Please note:

  • Cost is $5 per child per activity.
  • Online bookings open on Monday 23 June, 9.30am.
  • Bookings and online payment are essential, there will be no refunds issued.
  • Parents/carers of children under 12 years are required by library policy to remain in the building while their children attend the event.
  • There is a maximum of three events per child.

Oceans at nightTuesday 8 July, 10-11am
Duncraig Library

Join artist and illustrator Cindy Lane and create a glow-in-the-dark jellyfish based on her picture book ‘Oceans at Night’. Learn about bioluminescence and the nocturnal behaviour of ocean creatures whilst experimenting with watercolour paints and luminescent markers. Suitable for ages 5-10 years.  

Paint and plantTuesday 8 July, 2-3.30pm
Woodvale Library
Decorate your own terracotta pot with colourful paintsthen choose from a selection of seeds to plant and watch them grow in your garden. Perfect for little green thumbs and budding artists! Suitable for ages 6-10 years.  
Marvellous minibeastsThursday 10 July, 2-3pm
Whitford Library
Learn about the weird and wonderful world of invertebrates in this hands-on workshop with Eco-Action. Children will have the opportunity to interact with a collection of minibeasts, including stick insects, giant burrowing cockroaches and beetles and will discover the important role they play in ecosystems. Suitable for ages 6-10 years.  
Nude lunch boxes and beeswax wrapsFriday 11 July, 10-11am
Joondalup Library

Celebrate Plastic free July with a fun and interactive workshop with waste educator Peg Davies. Discuss what a 'nude' or no-packaging lunch box would look like and then attempt to pack your own. Learn about the benefits of beeswax wraps as an alternative to plastic wrap and then make your own wrap to take home and use in your school lunchbox.   

Suitable for ages 8-12 years.  


Lego artMonday 14 July, 10-11.30am
Joondalup Library

Do you love using paint and building with Lego? Join local designer Ange Suleman and create a colourful and personalised keepsake to display in your bedroom. Children will paint their own treasure box, then decorate the top using Lego pieces to create an imaginative 3-D world. Suitable for ages 7-12 years.  


Puppet labTuesday 15 July, 10-11.30am
Woodvale Library

In this hands-on workshop children will learn how to combine puppetry, storytelling and new digital technologies. Using a custom-built app, children will design their own digital puppets and create stories and movement through state-of-the-art hand-tracking technology. It’s a digital puppetry experience like no other (iPads supplied). Suitable for ages 8-12 years. 

Scratch art from scratchWednesday 16 July, 2-3.30pm
Whitford Library
Come along for a fun afternoon and create your own Scratch Art paper. Explore different techniques using paint and crayons and scratch beautiful designs to create a colourful masterpiece to take home. It’s the perfect craft project for a rainy day!  Suitable for ages 7-10 years.  
Wildlife encountersThursday 17 July, 2-3pm
Duncraig Library
Come and learn about the amazing work done at the WA Wildlife Hospital to help our unique native animals. Meet some incredible reptiles up close and learn all about their habitats, behaviours and how we can help protect them. Suitable for ages 5-12 years.

Treasure Hunt
Visit the Libraries any time during the school holidays and complete our free treasure hunt.

Story Time
Come and enjoy stories, songs and creative play at our regular story time sessions.
Suitable for children 2-4 years. 

Holiday Toddler Time
Woodvale Library, 10am
Thursday 10 and 17 July
Join in these special holiday sessions, with stories, singing, movement and active play. Suitable for children 18-30 months.
