Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob, South Ward Councillors Russ Fishwick and John Raftis, South West Ward Councillor Christine Hamilton-Prime and Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins joined local riders at Padbury’s Gibson Park in late November to break ground on a new state-of-the-art pump bike track.

The new facility will cater for entry and intermediate level BMX users and incorporate a loop circuit and asphalt track with rolling humps.

About $800,000 has been invested in the new track and associated infrastructure, with the State Government contributing $600,000 through a Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries grant. The project will be managed and delivered by the City of Joondalup.

Additional features include a universal access toilet, picnic setting and shelter, bench seating, extension of the footpath network and centralised mulched garden areas.

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob highlighted the significance of this development for the local community.

“Padbury is home to many young families, and Gibson Park is the ideal location for infrastructure of this nature,” he said.

“Our Youth Recreation Strategy identified a need for more facilities like this in the southern part of our City, where young people can get outdoors and active in a safe and supportive environment.

“By incorporating other amenities such as a universal access toilet into the project, visitors will be able to stay and enjoy the park for longer periods.

“With Duncraig Adventure Hub now under construction and a mountain bike trail in Joondalup set to open, it’s a great time to be an outdoor enthusiast in our City, particularly if you are a young person.”

Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins echoed these sentiments, emphasising the project’s role in enhancing community recreational facilities.

“The Cook Government is proud to fund this exciting project! The pump track will provide numerous benefits to the community, including promoting fun physical activity and offering an engaging way for locals to stay active,” she said.

“It will also serve as a social hub, fostering community engagement and providing a positive space for young people. Additionally, the track enhances our local amenities, making Gibson Park an even more attractive destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts.”

Padbury resident Slade Matthews said he and his sons (both 13) will be regular users of the track and welcomed the opportunity to have a place to ride that was so close to home.

“This track is much needed for the community, kids and adults alike. I am fortunate I get the opportunity to do this with my kids, it looks like heaps of fun,” he said.

“The way this is being set up; it will be a great social place as its not hidden away out of sight. The builders, Three Chillies, also do some great trail and tracks.

“We can’t wait to ride this track and are super stoked it’s being built in Padbury.”

Construction starts in December 2024 and is expected to be completed in March 2025.

All efforts will be made to minimise disruption to residents during the construction period.
