Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob, South Ward Councillors John Raftis and Russ Fishwick and Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins joined local riders at Padbury’s Gibson Park earlier today to test out the recently completed pump bike track.

The track caters for entry and intermediate-level BMX enthusiasts, incorporating a loop circuit and asphalt track with rolling humps.

Even some two years old riders have given the track the thumbs up.

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said the Padbury venue was an ideal location to house infrastructure of this nature.

“There are a number of young families in the area who will benefit from this great new track,” he said.

“Our Youth Recreation Strategy identified a need for more facilities like this in the southern part of our city that allow young people to get outdoors and active in a safe and supportive environment.

“And there is more infrastructure of this type on its way. A similar track is almost complete at Lysander Park in Heathridge and the much-anticipated Duncraig Adventure Hub will open later this year. It’s a great time to be an outdoor enthusiast in our city, particularly for young people.”

The State Government contributed $600,000 towards the Gibson Park upgrade through a Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries grant. The project was managed and delivered by the city.

“Over 600 Padbury residents completed my online survey to register their support for a pump track,” Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins said.

“I’m so proud to have secured State Government funding for this amazing new outdoor recreation resource in Padbury and it’s fantastic to see that it’s already being enjoyed by so many local families.”
Gibson Park also has a host of new amenities, including a universal access toilet, picnic setting and shelter, bench seating, extended footpaths, and beautiful centralised mulched garden area.

“By incorporating a universal access toilet into the project, visitors to Gibson Park can enjoy the park for longer periods,” Mayor Jacob said.
