Isabella the humanoid robot has arrived in Joondalup!
A partnership between North Metropolitan TAFE and the City of Joondalup, Isabella is being programmed by students studying at North Metropolitan TAFE and will also be making appearances at City events.
Students involved in this project are studying a Diploma of Information Technology (Games and Intelligent Systems), a one-year program focused on cutting-edge technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality and game development.
Part of the North Metropolitan TAFE "Live Works" class, this project presents a wide range of challenges, including establishing network connectivity, configuring the robot's onboard systems, customizing programming using the ROS framework, enabling remote and autonomous movement, and integrating a large language model (LLM) to handle conversational speech. These complex tasks offer a real-world opportunity for students to apply and expand their technical expertise.
The project offers significant benefits to both North Metropolitan TAFE and the City of Joondalup, providing students with a hands-on experience with a state-of-the-art robot, and supporting the City’s innovation and tourism objectives by providing a robot capable of engaging with the public and showcasing the many attractions and attributes of the region.
