Brian Bwoga is using his immeasurable grief to make a positive difference in the world. And he is doing so in memory of his son, ZaZa.

Earlier today, Beldon resident Mr Bwoga joined Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob, Hillarys MLA Caitlin Collins and Councillor Rebecca Pizzey at Joondalup Library to witness the installation of the first LifeVac airway clearance device at community-based venues across the City of Joondalup.

This was his idea after all.

In January 2024, Mr Bwoga’s son choked on an outing at Iluka Foreshore Park. The 22-month-old died in his dad’s arms.

Since then, Mr Bwoga has made it his mission to ensure no one goes through the nightmare that he and his family have endured.

LifeVac is a self-powered, single-patient, portable suction device developed for clearing the upper airway. Used in the United States for over a decade, it is designed to be used in an emergency when standard first aid protocols fail to relieve a choking incident.

Supplied in kit form (with instructions), LifeVac is recommended for use on people over 10kg or from 12 months of age. The cost to install the devices across the City’s community-based venues is approximately $5,200.

As part of this campaign, Mr Bwoga addressed Joondalup Council in October 2024.

Mayor Jacob described that speech as one of the most moving he had witnessed in his many years as an elected member and said the City’s investment was a small price to pay if the LifeVac devices saved one life.

“Mr Bwoga did his son proud, delivering a speech to Council that will not soon be forgotten,” he said.

“We are privileged that he brought this idea to the City and humbled that we have been able to support his wishes.

“Mr Bwoga is to be commended for his bravery, turning this terrible tragedy into a positive for our community.”

Councillor Rebecca Pizzey, who brought the initiative forward as a Notice of Motion, praised Brian and thanked her fellow Councillors for their support.

“This initiative is a testament to Brian’s strength and resilience on behalf of our community. By installing these LifeVac devices, we are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of our residents. It’s a powerful reminder that even in the face of tragedy, we can come together to create meaningful change,” she said.

Mr Bwoga expressed his deep relief and gratitude.

“I am deeply moved by the support from the City of Joondalup. My hope is that these devices will save lives and prevent other families from experiencing the heartbreak that we have endured. This is for ZaZa and for every child in our community,” he said.
