City profile and suburbs

The City of Joondalup is located on Mooro Boodjar (Mooro Country) in the fast-growing northwest corridor of Perth’s metropolitan region, with its southern boundary just 15 kilometres from the Central Business District of Perth.

The City has six wards comprised of the 22 suburbs Burns Beach, Kinross, Iluka, Currambine, Joondalup, Ocean Reef, Connolly, Heathridge, Edgewater, Mullaloo, Beldon, Kallaroo, Craigie, Woodvale, Hillarys, Padbury, Kingsley, Sorrento, Duncraig, Greenwood, Marmion and Warwick. 

With a population of 164,000 and a total land area of approximately 99 square kilometres, the City is one of the largest local governments in Western Australia. 

The region has always attracted international guests and immigrants with almost 40 per cent of the population born overseas.

Joondalup enjoys a sunny, Mediterranean-like climate, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters.

The City Centre has a relaxed, casual atmosphere with a combination of cultural, civic, commercial and residential properties built on the edge of the stunning Lake Joondalup. 

A wide variety of retail outlets and an excellent selection of restaurants and cafés gives the City a cosmopolitan feel. Four public libraries and a leisure centre also offer the community spaces for both physical and mental recreation.  

Residents and visitors can explore 17kms of pristine coastline and over 300 parks and reserves, including Yellagonga Regional Park. The City is also home to numerous sporting grounds and play spaces, as well as the Whitfords Nodes Health and Wellbeing Hub.

With numerous visitor attractions and amenities, such as Hillarys Boat Harbour and The Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA), and a wide range of diverse activities, events and festivals held throughout the year, the region is a must-see for international and interstate holiday-makers, business visitors, day trippers and Western Australian families.

Transportation

The region is easily accessible by road, rail, ferry and helicopter networks.   

  • Joondalup is only a 30-minute drive from Perth International Airport 
  • The City Centre is located 25 minutes north of Perth along either the Mitchell Freeway or the Perth-Joondalup Train Line 
  • Hillarys Boat Harbour is the northern gateway to Rottnest Island.

There are also a range of public transport options available to travel in and around the City Centre and surrounding suburbs, including the free Central Area Transit (CAT) bus service.

One of the largest industries by employment is health care, with Joondalup Health Campus set to become Western Australia’s largest hospital.
